About Alan Coffman

"Essential oils are adaptogens in that they seem to understand -- or the body understands -- instinctively where their influence is needed and how it should be used."

-- Daniel Penoel, M.D.

French Essential Oil Therapy

One of the many tools nature provides to assist our body's self-healing process are the healing plants, or herbs. A select group of these plants contains an elevated percentage of the beneficial compounds known as essential oils. A number of therapeutic herbs commonly used in dried form or in tinctures of alcohol can also be distilled into an essential oil. The key difference is one of concentration. The essential oil can be from 100 to 10,000 times more concentrated - and therefore more potent - than the herb itself.

What Are Essential Oils Useful For?

Essential oils capture a dynamic aspect of the life force of plants. These highly concentrated essences have for centuries been shown to be effective for addressing a broad range of health conditions, including those of the circulatory, respiratory, immune, digestive, nervous and musculo-skeletal systems. Essential oils provide natural antibiotics: antifungal/ antiviral/ antibacterial compounds. They have been shown to have a profound influence on the central nervous system, helping to reduce or eliminate pain, release muscle tension or provide strong emotional uplift.

What is Essential Oil Therapy Like?

Essential oils are easy and pleasant to use. Most of the oils smell wonderful; some are used as natural perfumes and deodorants. They can be applied to the skin locally, or on the feet or hands; inhaled; applied to acupuncture points on the body or ears; and sent deeper into your tissues by adding hot or cold compresses, among other applications. Essential oils carry the potential for healing and balancing both your physical body and your mental-emotional self. For self-care, the oils are typically applied 2 to 4 times a day to give the body continuous support.

French Essential Oil Therapy

French-style applications of therapeutic essential oils emphasize the use of oils neat (undiluted) or diluted 1:1 in a carrier oil, in contrast to the popular English style of aromatherapy which uses them in a highly dilute form (1 to 3% concentrations). Oils may be custom-blended, layered (applied sequentially), or applied with gentle pressure to work the oils into the tissues.

Therapeutic Quality

As with any substance used for healing, quality makes all the difference. The oils I use are organic, without toxic extenders or preservatives or any other additives. They meet the high AFNOR and ISO standards which are used to protect consumers of essential oils in Europe.
